Understanding SIP, Step-up SIP & XIRR
What is a SIP?
A Systematic Investment Plan lets you invest a fixed amount in mutual funds every month. You benefit from rupee cost averaging: buying more units when markets fall and fewer when they rise, smoothing your average purchase price over time.
Even a modest ₹5,000 monthly SIP can grow substantially over 15–20 years thanks to compounding.
What is a Step-up SIP?
A Step-up SIP automatically increases your monthly investment by a fixed percentage each year. Starting with ₹5,000 at 10% annual step-up means ₹5,500 in Year 2, ₹6,050 in Year 3, and so on.
This aligns with salary growth and can result in 30–60% more wealth over a 15-year horizon compared to a flat SIP.
Assumed Return vs XIRR
This calculator projects future value using a fixed assumed annual return. Real mutual fund returns vary each year. Your true return is measured by XIRR, which accounts for each investment date and amount.
